About Classic Backdrops
Classic Backdrops is the studio of artist Jeff Alumbaugh, a veteran backdrop painter whose work has appeared on stages seen by millions. Over the years, he has created large-scale hand-painted backdrops for iconic rock acts including KISS, Queensrÿche, Tesla, Night Ranger, Ratt, Smash Mouth, April Wine, and others.
This work comes from the real backdrop world—painted by hand, built for scale, and designed to hold presence under stage lights. In an era of screens and disposable visuals, Classic Backdrops exists to keep alive the power of painted stage art: bold, physical imagery that gives a band a distinct visual identity on stage.
Every backdrop is created with the understanding that it has to work where it counts—in the room, from a distance, under lighting, and in front of a live audience. The goal is not decoration. The goal is impact. At the same time, the work reflects something deeper: a belief in paying forward the opportunities that helped shape Jeff’s own path, and in using creativity as a way to encourage and inspire kids at a time when artistic opportunities continue to disappear.
About Jeff Alumbaugh
I’ve been immersed in art and visual storytelling for as long as I can remember. It started with crayons on the front room floor and steadily evolved into painting stage backdrops for many iconic classic rock bands. Along the way, I built my foundation through art classes in high school and community college, along with invaluable experience working under some of the nation’s top painters. I went on to paint towering billboards in Las Vegas, run a successful sign painting shop serving high-profile organizations, and ultimately step into the world of large-scale stage backdrops.

Through it all, I developed a strong understanding of how large-format artwork has to function in the real world. A stage backdrop is not just an image. It has to read at a distance, respond to lighting, hold presence in a venue, and become part of the energy of a live performance. That understanding was shaped through years of hands-on work and continues to guide every piece I create.
While much of the industry has shifted toward digital visuals, I remain deeply connected to the power of hand-painted stage art. Just as important, I believe in paying forward the opportunities that shaped my own journey. That belief now drives a bigger purpose behind the work: using my experience, artwork, and creative background to help inspire kids, support the arts, and show the next generation what is possible through imagination and hands-on creativity.
